The Veneer series is a study of the materials that shape our lives, and how thin the veneer of our own reality truly is. This series offers mediative moments through the textures of wood, metal, and stone, all completely created in acrylic.

Using only molding paste, black acrylic paint, and wood working tools, this painting is meant to emulate "shou sugi ban," or Japanese style burnt cypress.
The concept is a meditation on the natural vs. artificial (or superficial). So often we encounter a veneer of superficiality, a thin layer masking identity. And yet, we soon see one's true nature was there all along, a backdrop for the face we choose to wear.

Originally started as an ode to Richard Serra, this piece uses acrylic mediums and several shades of black paint to give the illusion of metal when sunlight hits its surface.
At night, the painting is much darker and matte, and in the daylight it shines like precious metal.
