The Intimacy series explores the need to be close to understand the subject. Direct light and presence bring a sense of discovery—for when we experience closeness, our perception shifts, and we are open to accept our new understanding of reality.

Road to Valhalla
Details: 30x48, Acrylic on Canvas
The most conceptual and expressive work in the Intimacy series, Road to Valhalla employs large amounts of heavy acrylic paint and layering techniques to create textures that when exposed to light reveal an abstraction of the sun, ocean waves, and a winter’s storm.
This piece speaks to a recent personal journey, moving from NYC to Colorado—its reflects a desire for a deeper connection and closeness to nature. And it speaks to all of our journeys that seek for us to be closer to that which we desire.

Arctic Waves
Details: 24x36, Acrylic on Canvas
Having spent over a decade traveling as a Creative Director for design agencies, I recalled a commonly reoccurring moment. When seated on a plane descending into a coastal city, I would gaze out the window, down to the earth below, and see the froth of waves across the coastline.
It always looked to me like marble, a pattern of water that had been frozen in time—that only when I would get a bit closer, could I see the enormous energy of the ocean come alive.
Subdermal
Details: 30x48, Acrylic on Canvas
As part of the exploration of the idea of Intimacy, I considered what it is that we see, and what are the unknowns that lurk beneath. The delight of each relevation, is that we are so often awed by individual nuances. I believe one of the great joys in life is the pleasant surprise—the moments when we are particularly guarded, only to be disarmed by the presence of something truly wonderful.
This work is the most complex in the series by means of execution, the result of over 20 layers of mediums and acrylics. The right side of the painting along took a month to develop—a process of sculpting with molding mediums, scraping in pearlescent mica flakes, hand carving with wood working tools, and painting over and over again with varying weight paints.
