While the world was breathlessly awaiting the release of Apple Watch, IBM and our client, Citi, started crafting a plan to develop and release one of the first wearable banking apps. Citi partnered with me and my team at Critical Mass to come on board as an extension of their team.
Our combined mission was to raise Citi’s App Store rating and ensure that the look, feel, and functionality of the Apple Watch experience would be both brilliantly innovative and perfectly on-brand.

Citi left nothing to chance and asked us, a trusted UX and Design partner for nearly ten years, to come on board as an extension of their team.
Our combined mission was to raise Citi’s App Store rating and ensure that the look, feel and functionality of the Apple Watch experience would be both brilliantly innovative and perfectly on-brand.
We worked closely with Citi to refactor their existing mobile app from the ground up, helping them make the move to a truly native iOS. Information architecture, navigation and feature location all got reimagined, remapped, and redesigned.
And it happened fast. Thanks to our accelerated process, we delivered 14 sprints of design to Citi’s developers in a mere five months.

As part of the mobile app design initiative, we developed a system that could account for various Citi products, including modifying colors and features for premium-tier offerings, such as Citigold.

We created workflows for many of Citi's primary financial products, including primary banking and savings, managed investment accounts, credit cards, auto and home loans, and more.

As is common with large distributed and highly matrixed organizations, Citibank struggled with development velocity and consistency across teams.
Over the course of a few years, my design team at Critical Mass was able to create a complete Citibank Digital Design Language—the result of collaborating closely to help unify the often complex and competing goals of cross-functional stakeholder, development, and product teams.
